Mid-century Modern in Peterborough
Peterborough, Ontario
Suburban urbanity
This streamlined house type can be found in suburbs across North America. Invented in California and true to the mid-century Modern style, the ideas woven into the building represent everything that was optimistic and liberating about our post-war cities. House lots were bigger, the open carport welcomed the family car, and the sweeping roofline mimicked the vaulted ceilings within.
We were intrigued by the open plan to be found inside and by the beautiful landscaping of the property. Our design has been to renovate the interior and to attach a garage to the carport, forming a covered entrance. On the ground floor, we have extend the cathedral ceiling across the Kitchen and Dining Room. By peeling open the outside brickwork, new windows have been introduced to seize on the wonderful panoramas of the property. Cabinetwork takes its cues from the Nineteen Sixties, and finishes such as cork flooring romp across the open plan. We base our design simply on great views, good natural light and an energy retrofit consistent with our strategy for older homes.
