Stone house in the County
Peterborough, Ontario
Breathing time into a new home
We were asked to consider building a new home in the heart of Prince Edward County. The property was hidden and mysterious, concealed behind a perimeter of forest. The client’s family had been in the County for a long time and knew well its rolling landscape of farms and vineyards.
The project developed into a simple 3-bedroom house. The modest 2000 square-foot footprint understates the 20′ high ceiling that rises over the kitchen and living area. The bedrooms too have high ceilings. Stone cladding typical of the Loyalist homes nearby helps breathe age into the house.
Because of its L-shaped plan, the house cradles a courtyard containing a swimming pool and planting beds. The buffer of farmland around the property makes for a very private place. A cherished 200 year-old oak stands to one side of the courtyard, dominating the skyline.
